Who is using Twitter?

So my question is, who is using Twitter now and can it be used in a library setting? What's your verdict, if you've been using for awhile?

Yep. Using it. Just to play with librarian friends right now.

Maybe for library. Book discussion group, over a week instead of just an hour, for example.

Library settings: Maybe it can be useful at conferences, not realy sure yet.

I´m twittering right now and thinking about possible uses in the library. It would be a good way to pass messages to a lot of people on a special activity (using the SMS feature) and for a select group when something of interest comes up in the library, new book or acitivty. And it could be used as a marketing tool to show the working day of a librarian (good for recruitment etc.).

After thinking about it, we may have a use case in our library as well. We have laptops with a two-day checkout period that are first-come first serve. Giving our laptops a twitter account, and marking them as available when they come in may actually be useful.

Twitering a bit lately, I can see 'serious' uses for it - but I'm only playing around quietly observing the people I know for now. It'll be interesting to see what uses we all come up with and implement... Incidentally, I think the Twitter server timezone settings haven't been updated to the new DST dates; anyone else see their posts show up with a timestamp an hour before they post?

I used Twitter for about two weeks and quickly realized how addictive it can become! I was using it to announce stuff at our library and just to say hello. but before I realized it, I had like five followers who were getting my posts via text and that blew me away. Potential is great, particularly for social library butterflies like maybe our teens? Book club groupies? You name it!

Actually that's a really good question, and I'm not sure what the answer is. I'm not sure it's anything more than a message board, but somehow it's something more. Wikipedia is calling it a micro-blogging platform; that sounds about right.
