Just posted an entry about a Twitter experiment I've been tinkering with. http://library20.ning.com/profiles/blogs/twitter-experiment

I've just started playing with Twitter, and have updated it from my cell, which is convenient. I'll have to read more about it and play with it some more!

I recently started a Twitter account for our school district library page. I'm using TweetLater to schedule Tweets. I can always add things 'live' along the way. I'm going to not just promote library related events, but give good website links, author webpages, wish author's happy birthday with a link to search our library catalog for books by that author. Maybe even some tips for searching our databases. I'v embedded a widget on our page, so the posts are available to all even if they don't want to follow or are not on Twitter. @dentonisdlib

I just added School Library Journal to the list of vendors. I follow them and I've picked up on some interesting articles that way. I also follow GaleCengage. I got wind of free limited tiem resources they were offering for Earth day (if you already subscribe to other Gale products).
Another that is not a vender, but I have been following is http://twitter.com/americagovprint

Interesting blog post about 'Twittephemeraliness' - trouble finding past tweets, even with hash tags. http://tinyurl.com/cqfb7f

I follow a number of Twitterers and I find the best ones are actual people. Why? Even though I don't enjoy reading about breakfast choices, or bad days at work, or frustrating shopping lines, I like and benefit from seeing information. That's one reason I stopped following the Library of Congress - there was no information and it was just chatter - totally useless unless you're an employee of LC. I follow O'Reilly Media because they do convey interesting information, though sometimes their advertising gets to me. But they are approachable - if you write to them, they write back in a cheerful manner.

I feel that thinking of Twitter as a one-way street (you to your followers) means your end. You have to create conversations (this is a mantra of Library 2.0). Twitter allows you to do this in an informal way.

It seems to me that if a library is going to use Twitter, they have to avoid those two major pitfals: not sounding like a commercial enterprise and conveying something that is useful.
