- Oh Dave, I just saw this comment! It's been a whirlwind here at my new job but I can't believe I haven't checked back here since August!
I'm on the Horizon-l list but I didn't realize there was an IPAC list! That would explain a lot. :-) I'm off to search for it.
As for your other comments, I implemented the EZProxy, which *was* surprisingly easy, but it has nothing to do with our HIP.

- I won't be able to fully crunch the numbers until the survey closes on the 14th, but (so far) UK respondents have consistently rated the importance of each feature lower than the other major countries (Australia, New Zealand, Canada, and USA), with the exception of "enriched content".
It will be interesting to speculate why this is ...are UK libraries less aware of these features? ...are they aware but they have other priorities or simply don't regard them as being important? ...are we just a bunch of cynical whiners?
Interestingly, New Zealand is almost the opposite -- very few of the respondents have implemented (or plan to implement) the "more cowbell" features, but they often give the features very high importance. In fact, the only feature that seems to be widely implemented in NZ is enriched content (86% of respondents have it).
Some of the other trends appearing in the survey are that:
1) people who have implemented a feature consistently give that feature an average importance higher than those who haven't implemented it
2) people who are planning to implement a feature nearly always rate its importance higher than those who have already implemented it

Good guess, but wrong.....so I can't answer your question about Encore. My lot has been in Bristol for almost 30 years though not under our current name. My recent experience with public libraries is that a web presence and a good Library 2.0 type OPAC don't figure highly on their list of priorities; for example we can offer almost everything on your 'More Cowbell' list but many libraries don't seem interested. Perhaps your survey will prove me wrong.

I guess being based in Bristol makes you a III man?
The survey is bringing in some really useful data.
There definitely seems to be a difference between what respondents regard as being important features in a modern OPAC and what vendors are currently supplying today.
Your last sentence implies that you don't think library users (and vendors?) see these as being important features to offer in an OPAC? If so, what's "Encore" all about?

- OK Dave .. happy to have you as a friend. We should keep in touch! I began my library life in Calderdale (Sowerby Bridge actually) just over the hill from where you are and still think of myself as a Yorkshire Librarian (though as you see I am now in Bristol). All my children are Yorkshire folk (my wife worked in Sowebry Bridge Library too and now works in our local library here) if that counts for anything. Current thing is - what are you finding out about OPACs? I think if you talked to system suppliers as well as users you would find out some surprising things.... well some system suppliers anyway.

Yay -- they did come after all!
One of the "chicken and egg" problems with Library 2.0 is the "if you build it, will they come" question. Of course, you'll never know until you do actually build it! ;-)
I've been monitoring usage of some of our 2.0-ish tweaks to the OPAC for nearly a year now and, if it's of use, I've posted some graphs and stats on my blog: http://www.daveyp.com/blog/index.php/archives/189/
