I am the Sound/Audio Preservation Archivist at Berea College in Berea, KY. In my job I preserve thousands of unique audio recordings of Appalachian music, culture, and oral histories. This is done by converting analog formats such as reel-to-reel and cassette tapes to high resolution digital files, which are then stored on a high capacity storage server with multiple backups. Access to the collection is available through the Berea College Sound Archives.
My library/archives career started after working in the performing arts and music industry for nearly 10 years, then going back to get an MLIS from the University of Kentucky.

Hi John,
WOW your job sounds so exciting! We are just starting to digitize our photos and use CONTENTdm... we always have multimedia archiving . I work closely with our university archivist at Fairfield U in CT.
Glad to see you here!
Life after the banjo. Imagine that! I had no idea. I only remember reading that he had some kind of musical background, but nothing specific. Wow! Thanks for the clarification.
No, not that Bernie Krause. I mean Bernie Krause the Acoustic Ecologist. He wrote Wild Soundscapes: Discovering the Voice of the Natural World, an amazing book. It totally changed how I hear the world around me. He's also done a bunch of recordings of natural habitats that are outstanding.
John! So nice to see ya here bud. Hope you are still diggin your job in Berea. I miss that area so much and have so many good memories of Berea dating back into high school even. Plus, I am a huge bluegrass and folk fan. Born and raised eastern Kentuckian, so those are my peeps. :-) Keep in touch.
