Woups, I no longer work at the library

As some may remember, I announced earlier that I would participate and speak at the Internet Librarian conference.

Well, I love the fact that stuff changes and consequently I now have new job at the consultancy company called Creuna. I'm doing some of the same stuff here as I did at the State and University Library - I just do more of it. I observe users' behavio… Continue

We're open sourcing a smooth, integrated library search system

I just joined the Ning/Library 2.0-network. I wonder how many networks we will end up with: Flickr-network, del.icio.us-network, LinkedIn, Twitter-network, well... I guess every network has a different purpose. And my participation in this network will be primarily for conecting to other libraries who are interested in making better OPACs. Or wait - I better say: People who are interested in making nice search systems for library stuff. I think the term OPAC has some wrong connotations :-)

Hi Jens,
I'm a teacher librarian & recently started a community based blog for getting boys to read - http://GettingBoysToRead.com. Please send me a friend request if you'd like to network, share ideas, and learn more about getting boys to read.

Sincerely,

Hi Jens,

That's unfortunate. In the US our data is all over the place. My frustration is that, being a small academic institution, my library doesn't have the money to afford a newer integrated library system. The vendors are very slow to respond to new technologies. So lack of resources and support hinder us from being able to provide the interfaces we would like to.

Take care,
Rhonda

I guess the biggest challenge is the lack of will from the Danish Library Agency to power up the development of useful new technologies such as relevance based search or a real social opac. We have a national all-containing catalog (called bibliotek.dk) but it's technology and interface is really old school - very sad when we have all the data in one place. Some work is done on the site, but there's a lack of strategy and in my oppinion lack of talented interface designers and people with insight into the newest technology.

Another thing I miss is the lack of initiative on important projects such as digitizing all Danish books. The copyright law actually permits us to do that in a fashion like Google Books - but the Danish Library Agency simply doesn't prioritize it.

So even though we may have a library system in Denmark being in the top 5 of world's best library systems, there's really still room for improvement.

How are you doing in Colorado? It could be cool to meet up in London - nice place :-)

Jens,

I'm envious. I wish I could attend Internet Librarian International!
My family and I were in London last summer and wished we had more time to see everything.

So what is the biggest challenge you are facing in libraries in Denmark?

Rhonda
