Vancouver Island Regional Library
About Me:
I am in a newly created position at VIRL. A combination of two or three previous postions now merged into the Virtual Services Manager.

I graduated recently with my MLIS from the University of Alberta and went on an extended trip to Africa before I started looking for work. I love what I do, and would like to race into 2.0, but am held back somewhat by the size of our organization. We are getting there though.

Keeping up with the Jone's

Yes, it has been a long time. I spend much of my time visiting '2.0' sites, reading library and tech blogs and of course, working. I seem to have forgotten to keep my own virtual presence going. I find myself wondering if I need to worry about it. Am I concerned that I won't measure up, that I really have nothing new to offer?

I went from here to Facebook (or as a friend of mine called it 'Crackbook') which grabbed me and kept me prisoner for a while but it has lost its golden glow. I am a cons… Continue

Long hiatus

Hmmm, just so much virtual space to explore and only so much time to do it in. I must admit to a recent Facebook addiction. I wonder if there is some help for that?

Anyway, I am on holidays to Scotland soon, mainly Northeast, Edinburgh, Inverness, area and wee bit of time in Glasgow.

Any suggestions, especially with regard to libraries to visit?

Thnx

Some good news...

The blog policy that I wrote was put forward to senior management, was approved and is now official policy. Wow, feels a bit strange, but at the same time I have come across another policy statement written for a museum setting that I really like and would like to incorporate some aspects of it (thanks DA). I have come to the conclusion that this policy is a living document and will continue to evolve. As it should.

Now if only I could convince staff that it is not that time consuming… Continue

Just for fun folks

Okay, read the following and then click the link at the bottom, too cool!

And you thought those people that set up roomfuls of dominos to knock over were amazing. There are no computer graphics or digital tricks in the film. Everything you see really happened in real time exactly as you see it. The film took 606 takes. (Holy cow!) On the first 605 takes, something, usually very minor, didn't work. They would then have to set the whole thing up again. The crew spent weeks shooting night… Continue

Second Life

I attended a Sirsi Dynix session this morning on Second Life. I thought it was interesting to note that there were well over 200 attendees. I signed up for Second Life quite some time ago, but never got into it. Not sure why, because I used to really like Sim City and The Sims.

I will go back and play a while, but quite honestly I don't see the value, and already I have a hard enough time keeping up with my persona… Continue

Hi Janice,

How did you enjoy Edinburgh?

Hi Janice,

When are you over?

The Edinburgh Festival is starting up next week (I think...) and that lasts until the end of August iirc so always someting to see there.

If you are too late for that, then there is still loads and loads to do in Edinburgh.

Top Five
1. The Castle
2. The Art Galleries on The Mound, which can be accessed via
3. Princes Street Gardens
4. The Botanical Gardens
5. The Palace of Holyrood

Edinburgh is really small and most places can be got to on foot, in fact if the weather is fine I would recommend walking as you can just soak up the architecture etc

I'll have a wee dig about and see what sort of links I can send you too.

Hope this helps in the meantime though...... :-)

Hi Janice, we troublemakers have to stick together.
I totally relate to the problems of implementing new services for a large system. Not an easy task!

Completely forgot to answer your last question, Janice: Yes, the blog is used as a tool in class and serves as meeting place for an assignment students must do after class. The postings themselves are always related to some story we told in class, but is really simple chitchat for demo purposes.

Hi Janice,
Good to know you. You're just across the water from us. Okay, so it's about 120 miles of water, but still... Virtual Services Manager. Great title!
