Profile Information

Name of Your Library:
University of the South, duPont Library
About Me:
Library administrator/practitioner at a small liberal arts college library. My background is in cataloging. I am head of the department that does the technical services functions of the library, including acquisitions and cataloging. I am also in charge of managing electronic resources. I work in committees for various projects. I send a lot of email.
What is Your Interest in Library 2.0 (not yes or no)
I have been interested in cyberculture and social networks online for several years, from a personal standpoint, but have also sometimes gotten frustrated at not being able to find my way in, or not being able to understand the culture of the particular group.

In terms of libraries, I am painfully aware of how libraries are no longer the first place to go for information or to do research, and many people never even end up in a library or on a library's site. We spend thousands of dollars every year on powerful databases that contain resources that our students and faculty often never find. I want to find ways to make libraries easier to use and to add value to the user's experience. Roy Tennant said, "Librarians are the only people who like to search. Most people just want to find."

Progress report

I haven't written here for quite a while. I took my vacation, and I've been busy with the Learning 2.0 program I'm doing at my place of work. The blog for that is here. I also have a separate blog that I created for that program, which I hope to later use for more things.

The program is going pretty well. There are 55 people who work in the ITS division, including me. O

Unexpected crunch

I don't know how this happened. Things were going along just fine. Then I had to go out of town for two days last week, and I didn't have the next week of the Learning 2.0 program quite finished. No problem-- I could work on it over the weekend, and finish up Monday if needed. Saturday after my trip was full of errands with Tony. Sunday morning... I was sick. Some weird bug that put me out of commission. The bug was worse on Monday. I spent most of the day in bed. Luckily I am better today, exce… Continue

DSpace meeting

This coming week I will be attending the NITLE DSpace Pilot Service User Community Meeting in Hartford, CT. My library has just joined as a member of the project where NITLE libraries have a shared DSpace Pilot Service. A number of these libraries have already been using DSpace, and have created a shared repository that I think is called… Continue

Thoughts on blogging

I have toyed with the idea of starting a blog for a number of years. (I see this blog as a sort of trial blog, since it's part of my profile on this site and not really a stand-alone blog with a name, etc.) Lately, I've been ruminating over starting a "real" blog. What would I want to write about? Do I have anything unique to say that anyone would want to read? What "niche" should I focus on? What should I call it?

"The Overwhelmed Librarian"
"On the Fringes"
"Metadata Mias… Continue

Sopranos Finale

This has nothing to do with Library 2.0, but I can't help myself. I have never been excited about a television show before, but I can hardly wait for Sunday night's final episode of the Sopranos. Any Sopranos fans out there in library land?
