What is Your Interest in Library 2.0 (not yes or no)
Trying to make Web 2.0 goodness in a Microsoft environment (ASP.NET), increase access to community resources by building the better OPAC (pulled out of ILS using XML APIs) and allowing users to connect to that content (reviews, ratings, personal shelves, customizing interfaces), and also provide excellent content with feedback options.

New library teen site

All the work has kept me super busy and away from Ning for a while. However, we did launch JoCoTeenScene at the end of April, sporting the hours and locations widget! The site itself has some nice features and generally works across browsers. The widget can be seen at: http://www.jocoteenscene.org/library . For the library redesign, the functionality will be extended, and the technology will be used to… Continue

Usability and redesign

Usability is really big for me, and especially practical in a public setting in a Web 2.0 world. The library is redesigning its website, which began in 2004 with a study of its current site. The results were telling: people couldn't find half the services we provide. Some minor changes were made over 2005-6 to improve usability, and we are now finally getting to the point of a complete redesign.

Our first step was to look at what other libraries have done and ask ourselves what we like… Continue

JoCoBusiness and Japan

We have launched JoCoBusiness at http://www.jocobusiness.net. It features a lot of the new interactivity our redesigns (eight more to go) will have, including RSS feeds, comments, booklist reviews, and forums. We are also pushing content-on-demand. For instance, our database information is available if wanted, and it opens in a pseudo pop-up window. This feature needs refinement, but it's a good start. :-) Have suggestions on how to improve it? I'd love… Continue

Hours and Locations widget

I am working on a library hours and locations widget. It needs a lot of work, but what it does is dynamically update a table containing the hours of a specific branch. It is being pulled from an XML file using JavaScript. Right now, it only works in Firefox and the features are limited, but I see this as a very useful tool. An example is at:

Wow it looks like you get to work on some really cool stuff... and what's even better is that you have the chance to do it right!! To much Web technology (especially2.0 stuff) gets pushed to the periphery in libraries. It's great to see this stuff get the attention it deserves... so that the patrons get what they deserve!
