Local IT service unit banns library from social networks

Local Information Technology Service Unit of the small rural township of Bromolla, Sweden has banned the local library from social networks like Facebook and MySpace. The Bromolla Public Library’s pages on Facebook and MySpace was shut down during December, said local librarian Lina Ydrefeldt. The closing of the web pages was made due to problems with legal issues, according to an IT Service Unit spokesperson: “It is legally complicated for a local municipality to be a member of a social network.”

I couldn’t agree less. From my point of view, I believe that legislation often is far behind technology. Often old rules are not adaptable for new solutions. That is one part of it. The other is that the 2.0-evolution must not, cannot be stopped, not by the local IT service units, anyway.

Two good things, though:

First: if local IT service units makes obstacles for the 2.0-evolution you have to sharpen your arguments, which is good. Second: It gives you the chance to experience the power of Smart Crowds! Therefore, I have made a cause in Facebook, to find arguments for keeping Bromolla Public Library on Facebook. You are all welcome to join. (Although all information and discussion on the page is in Swedish for the moment, don’t hesitate to join.)
