Firefox Add On

Tree Style Tab :: Firefox Add-ons is a brand new add suggested to me via a Tweet from libraronin. I installed it and have found it to be very useful. It arranges tabs in a tree like way similar to the directory structure you see in Windows Explorer. the tabs can also be placed at the top or bottom or on the left or right sides of the browser window. Click on the link above to install it. I hghly recommend it.

Faculty ( or Librarian) Meeting Theater

After reading this post from InSide Higher Ed, I began wondering if the author had sat in on a recent staff meeting in my library. Read more at Faculty Meeting Theater :: Inside Higher Ed
Faculty Meeting Theater

By Al Campbell

It’s that magical time of the month: the faculty meeting.

I’ve only been attending these time-honored rituals for about five years, but I’ve noticed something a little unsettling about the behavior of my colleagues: Though some are as quirky and unpredictable as the Chicago weather, many cling like spandex to the same role, month after month, year after year, agenda after agenda. They seem a little typecast — much like an actor who is always The Ingénue or The Mustache-twirling Villain.

In the interests of taxonomy and comedy, I’ve identified and named some of these character types. See if you recognize any of the following roles, which you may have played with gusto, admired from afar, or suffered through in perturbed silence. All pronouns reflect the gender of the specimens at my college, but I trust males and females of all these types can be found in the academic wilds.

Pew Internet: Home Broadband 2008

Pew Internet: Home Broadband 2008 reports that:
Some 55% of all adult Americans now have a high-speed internet connection at home. The percentage of Americans with broadband at home has grown from 47% in early 2007. Poorer Americans saw no growth in broadband adoption in the past year while at the same time nearly one-third of broadband users pay more to get faster connections.

You can read the full report at PDF version. I have one big bone to pick with the Pew Internet and American Life Project. The project only reports on such things as home broadband but does not do any advocacy for increasing the reach of broadband access into rural or urban areas. I believe they should be involved in advocacy.

Over 3000 members on Library 2.0 Community

The community is also truly international in scope and membership. E-reader looks promising!

Here is one e-book reader I would be comfortable using. You can read more about it at New Scientist. The article links to a paper presented at ACM Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems (Florence, Italy) in April 2008. Watch the video below.

Social Networking Tools

I have been playing with Twitter (http://twitter.com/BillDrew4) again. I am beginning to find it useful. It has become more useful as I decrease the number of people I am following. I am also trying out FriendFeed (http://friendfeed.com/billdrew) which attempts to tie together all of my social networking. I am using Twhirl as a client for Twitter. It also works as a desktop cli… Continue

Library Director 2.0?

I have been appointed to serve as the Interim Library Director here at Tompkins Cortland Community College. It is an interesting time to do this as we are right in the middle of our renovation into part of the soon to be Learning Commons which will include tutorial services, academic computing administered computers, media center, and the library plus a coffee shop. I will be applying for the permanent position of library director. The Learning Commons will be jointly administered. It should be… Continue

Hey Bill, tried to share my GoogleCalendar with L2.0 but my event isn't showing up. ULA and MPLA are having a joint conference next week and I wanted to see who else is headed there... I'm probably missing something...

I'm hoping to learn more about the technology that individuals are using in their libraries to support the ideas behind Library 2.0. I've been involved in setting up a blog for the research section of a local college.

Hi Bill, would you like to participate in the Library 2.0 Member survey I created for my Research Methods class?! It's not very long, and is mostly demographic and interest information. If you do, I would appreciate any comments you have about how I could improve it. Thanks, Julie
