Starting to IM

We're planning to start a trial IM reference service in late April with some anxiety and minor trepidation. We'll probably staff it as part of reference desk duties, but we'll see how it goes.

Also, I wonder if we might have a better response to a Meebo widget on the Web page. Also, we are a medical library, so that might make a difference too. We are persevering and I hope that it will take off at some point. We do well with email reference, so perhaps it is just a matter of time.

We've been IMreference-ing fore a year or so -- the stats are lower than f2f and almost higher than email. IM is picking up & the almost viral quality of a positive answer to: "you mean I can IM the library for help?!" has done a lot to get the word out. Central placement on the library homepage helped jack the stats, too :)

How fabulous that you have that amazing mural!! Wow.

We just implemented an IM reference service last week, but haven't gotten much action, because we haven't really done any publicity yet. It is in the works. We are using Gaim, but I like Meebo better, personally. We are having the reference desk staff monitor the IM accounts as part of their shifts.
