Mid-career-changer librarian. Boy, was that a mistake. Nevertheless, I'm enjoying it more the longer I do it (MLIS eight years ago) and the people who come to me for help seem to leave with something they can work with. And I care about the collection.
I don't like the leave requests and the unionized environment, though I like the civil service protection. I do fall under several protected categories (which I don't feel like revealing here). The categories, however, give me a different perspective on life. The silver spoon I may have had has been replaced with a plastic spork, but there is probably a pension behind the spork.
Other information: I like travel, wasting time online, am a WILF (per current "Wired", a malformed acronym for "What was I looking for?"), definitely ADHD and probably OCD. All that stays under wraps for the patrons and colleagues, although they can see the cluttered desk and figure out the former.
I believe in "live and let live" and know the difference between "right" and "wrong". That's the mainline Protestant background popping out.
We generate our own electricity at home!
If I say much more (and the picture will give it away anyway), the gig is up.
Well, Web 2.0 applications - integrating GPS into photography, meaning tagging. The intersection of tagging and LCSH - "Cookery" versus "Armenian food". Mashups. Handheld (Palm in my case) applications which actually do something Library 2.0-like, even if it's just finding things.
KEEPING UP WITH MY COLLEAGUES WHO ARE LESS THAN HALF MY AGE. What a frightening thought that I would start to need youth to teach me (and how full of hubris). I'm a very lucky guy to have great young colleagues. Together we make a good team.
